Achievements

1. The National Irrigation Development Master plan

2. Rio Cobre Dam

The reconstruction of the Rio Cobre Dam in St. Catherine between June 1993 and May 1995 has been the National Irrigation Commission's most notable achievement to date. This dam which was breached in the floods of May 1991, has been accredited by the Jamaica Institute of Civil Engineers as one of the Engineering Projects of the year 1995.

The Dam has a diversion capacity of approximately 4,000 liters per second. Water from the Rio Cobre River is channeled through a network of distribution canals to serve as the main source of the water irrigating 13,000 hectares of Agricultural lands and supplying fresh-water fish-farms on the St. Catherine Plains
