CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

The National Irrigation Commission Limited (NIC) has been playing a pivotal supporting role in the development of Jamaica’s Agricultural Sector. This support is crucial to us all when examined against the background that agriculture is still the most suitable foundation upon which the sustenance of the majority of our people rests. To verify this statement we need only consider its contribution to employment, foreign exchange earnings (directly as well as by import substitution), and the matter of our national food security.

We believe in the pursuit of excellence, hence we fully accept the challenge generated by the Prime Minister’s call to provide the  best service for our customers. We are also mindful of the reciprocity that is necessary on the part of our customers to develop positive attitudes to the efficient use of the irrigation water that we provide. Successful and efficient irrigation management will therefore be a function of a positive correlation between the ‘interactive will’ of the staff of the Commission and the farmers whom we serve.

As someone who has been among the pioneers in the establishment of a customer service unit within the context of Public Sector Reform, I am rather sensitive to this matter, and will endeavour to influence the Commission along this course of action.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Commission, a commitment is hereby given, that we will endeavour to always serve with courtesy, dispatch and efficiency.

Rev. Dr. Garnet Brown, C.D., J.P.  Chairman
