The National Irrigation Commission Limited (NIC) seeks suitably qualified individuals for the contract post of:

FIELD ASSISTANT, Braco, Trelawny

Job Purpose

The Field Assistant is required to provide the necessary skills and experience to develop and maintain agricultural demonstration plots which will serve as research and testing sites. The incumbent will undertake data collection and analysis to support the development of best practices and to work with and train farmers to develop improved farming and irrigation techniques that will sustain and increase crop production.


 Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain demonstration plots throughout the Braco District as the need arises.

  • Assist in building capacity within farmers’ groups and strengthening working relationships between farmers and the NIC.

  • Assist in getting farmers to adopt best practices and new technologies on-farm, so that the objective of increased productivity may be realized.

  • Conduct on-farm monitoring and follow up visits after training and sensitization sessions are done with farmers.

  • Report on difficulties, challenges, production and agronomical issues as faced by farmers in a timely manner so that corrective and remedial actions can be taken.

  • Assist with the dissemination of technical and production information to farmers and participate in identifying marketing outlets for farm produce.

Required Skills/Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of best practices for growing and maintaining crop production, including all aspects of planting, cultivating, irrigating and pesticide application.

  • Knowledge of how to develop, maintain and harvest demonstration plots.

  • Ability to conduct research and collect data, using farming technology measuring devices and present findings.

  • Basic computer skills and experience with data entry & analysis.

  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to impart relevant knowledge to farmers.

  • Must possess initiative and the capacity to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Excellent customer service skills and an ability to diagnose and solve problems.

Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • Graduate Certification in Agriculture from College of Agriculture, Science & Education (CASE) or any other recognized institution;

  • Two (2) years agricultural field experience;

  • Experience in small plot research would be an asset;

  • Holder of a legitimate Driver’s License;

  • Must possess a roadworthy motor vehicle that is available for execution of job functions.
